  • Description

People in the state of Benue Plateau in northern Nigeria received a television service last week with the opening of the Benue Plateau Broadcasting Corporation's BPTV television station in Jos.

The Corporation was established in January, 1973, and immediately began planning the television station, which was opened by the Military Governor of the state, Police Commissioner J.D. Gomwalk, on Tuesday (25 February).

The black-and-white service covers 75 per cent of the state, and the General Manager of the Corporation, Dr. Girgis Salama, said colour transmission would begin in 1976.

The opening ceremony was carried live by the station and included performance by eight Nigerian musical and dance groups.

The project cost 2.5 million Niara (about GBP1.75 million sterling).
