  • Description

The 82-year-old Spanish leader, General Francisco Franco, was still fighting death on Monday (10 November), a day after his second major stomach operation in four days. His condition is described as grave.

General Franco underwent the second operation to remove two-thirds of his stomach along with 11 bleeding ulcers.

A team of 25 doctors in the ultra modern La Paz Hospital in Madrid have been working to keep General Franco alive on an artificial kidney machine. Medical sources say there is no hope for his eventual survival.

Since falling ill three weeks ago with influenza, General Franco has suffered four heart attacks, kidney problems, urea in the blood, intestinal bleeding, a paralysis of the intestines, blood clots and inflammation in the left thigh and lung problems.

His doctors say it is only miracles that are keeping him alive.

Security around the hospital in the north of the Spanish capital has been strict. Crowds of people continue their vigil outside the General's El pardo Palace.

A stream of visitors arrive at the hospital daily. Members of the General's family, including his wife, and top government and military officials visit the hospital frequently.
