  • Description

Morocco won through to the finals of the Africa Nations Cup during a cliff-hanging encounter with Ghana in Casablanca on Sunday (13 July).

Ghana had won the first leg 2-0. And although the Moroccans succeeded in pulling one goal back during the first half -- Larbi was the scorer -- they were still trailing 2-1 on aggregate with only one minute of full time to go.

Then, in the 89th minute, Morocco's Guezzar was fouled in the penalty area. Acila stepped up to take the penalty....and promptly equalised.

As there was no further scoring, the team to go forward to the finals in Ethiopia next year had to be settled by a sudden-death sequence of penalties. After the first eight had been taken, the two sides were still all square, having scored four each. And so it continued until Morocco finally edged ahead to win 6-5.

SYNOPSIS: Ghana in the dark strip kick off the second half of their vital match against Morocco in Casablanca on Sunday. It was the second leg of their battle for a place in the finals in the Africa Nations Cup. Ghana won the first encounter two-nil. But earlier in this match, during the first half, Morocco had come right back into the reckoning when Larbi pulled one goal back.

Morocco kept up the pressure during the second half, mounting a whole series of attacks. But the Ghanaian defence, showing great ability during heading duels, kept them from scoring the equaliser. And the Ghanaians continued to look dangerous during breakaway counter-attacks.

Forty-thousand spectators had their hearts in their mouths during this attack by fast-moving Ghana, when a shot from of their half-backs just flashed over the Moroccan bar.

The game built up to a nail-biting finish. Morocco were still losing two-one on aggregate until the very last minute of ordinary time. Then, during a final attack, a Moroccan player was fouled in front of goal and the referee awarded a penalty.

Acila took the penalty...and scored to equalise. After that, the match was decided on a series of penalties, with Morocco winning six-five.
