    Greek Cypriots on Sunday (25 March) celebrated Greek Independence Day with church services and a parade of schoolchildren and war veterans past the Greek Embassy in Nicosia.

    Archbishop Makarios conducted the church service, and later reviewed the Independence Day parade with the Greek Ambassador to Cyprus, Efstathios Lagakos.

    The Cyprus government. however, has cancelled this year's military parade through Nicosia on EOKA Day, April 1, because of the current disturbances within the Greek Cypriot community.

    Greek Cypriots from all over Nicosia turned out to celebrate the national day. Among the government officials taking part in the celebrations was Archbishop Makarios, seen here leaving the church where he conducted the service.

    Later, the celebrations moved to the Greek Embassy in Nicosia.

    Among the reception party at the Embassy were young girls in national costume. The Archbishop was officially welcomed outside the Embassy by the Greek Ambassador to Cyprus, Efstathios Lagakos.

    At the parade, Archbishop Makarios, together with the Greek Ambassador reviewed a march by schoolchildren and war veterans. Although the Independence Day parade was allowed to take place, the Cyprus government has cancelled this year's military parade through Nicosia on EOKA Day, April 1, because of the current disturbances within the Greek Cypriot community.
