Background: CEYLON'S GENERAL ELECTION IS TO BE HELD NEXT MONDAY.WITH LESS THAN A WEEK TO GO THE TWO MAJOR PARTIES ARE BRINGING THEIR CAMPAIGNS TO A CLIMAX.SUPPORT FOR MRS.BANDARANAIKE, WHO LEADS THE RULING SRI LANKA FREEDOM PARTY (S.L.F.P.), AND MR.SENANAYAKE, LEADER OF THE RIGHT-WING UNITED NATIONAL PARTY, (U.N.P.), SEEMS TO BE EVENLY SPLIT AND NO-ONE OUTSIDE THE PARTIES IS PREPARED TO PREDICT THE RESULT.

MRS.BANDARANAIKE'S PARTY IS STRENGTHENED BY LEFT-WING COALITION SUPPORTERS.SPEAKING AT A RALLY IN A PART AT NUGEGODA, MRS.BANDARANAIKE SAID THE GOVERNMENT HAD DONE A LOT TO IMPROVE THE CONDITION OF THE COMMON MAN AND THE PEASANT FARMER.SHE SAID THE COUNTRY'S VAST PROGRESS IN INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT COULD BE CLEARLY SEEN AND THE VARIOUS NATIONALISED SCHEMES HAD SAVE A GREAT DEAL OF FOREIGN EXCHANGE.CERTAIN SHORTCOMINGS, MRS, BANDARANAIKE SAID, LIKE THE SHORTAGE OF SOME GOODS, WOULD BE OVERCOME WHEN THE PEOPLE BENEFITED FROM THE SCHEMES SHE HAD ALREADY STARTED.ONE OF MRS.BANDARANAIKE'S CONTROVERSIAL ACTIONS WAS TO ACCEPT AID FROM THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA WHICH HAS BEEN WIDELY CRITICISED BY THE OPPOSITION PARTY AND THE PRESS.

MR.DUDLEY SENANAYAKE, WHO WAS CEYLON'S PRIME MINISTER FROM MARCH '52 TO OCTOBER '53 AND AGAIN FOR A BRIEF SPELL IN 1960, HAS CRITICISED THE BANDARANAIKE ADMINISTRATION FOR ACCEPTING CHINESE AID.ADDRESSING A UNITED NATIONAL PARTY RALLY AT RAGAMA, HE SAID THAT EVEN RELIGION WAS AT STAKE AND ALL THE COUNTRY'S HARD WON FREEDOM IF THE LEFT-WING COALITION CAME IN TO POWER.HE ASKED EVERYONE TO FORGET THEIR CASTE, CREED AND NATIONALITY DIFFERENCES AND VOTE IN THE UNITED NATIONAL PARTY IF THEY VALUED DEMOCRACY AND FREEDOM.
