  • Description

In Pakistan, Christians have been demonstrating against the nationalisation of all private schools and colleges, including those run by churches.

On Monday, 2,000 members of the Pakistan Masihi League (Pakistan Christian League), marched on the National Assembly in Islamabad to present a list of grievances. But police prevented them from getting closer than a quarter of a mile from the Assembly.

On the same day, in Rawalpindi, seven members of the Masihi League went on a hunger strike in support of their case.

Among their demands are that Christian property should not be nationalised; that Christians should have a five per cent representation in the National and Provincial Assemblies; and that Christian knowledge should be part of the school curriculum in Pakistan.

(On wednesday (30 August) there was a further demonstration involving Christians in Rawalpindi. Two people were shot dead by police and a third was killed by a bullet fired from the crowd, according to the district magistrate. The crowd was trying to march on President Bhutto's official residence.)
