Background: Leftists staged a big demonstration in central Tokyo yesterday (Sunday) to demand an end to Japan's security ties with the United States. The demonstrators were also seeking the immediate return to Japan of the American-administered island of Okinawa.
Tokyo police said that about 5000 students and unionists took part in the demonstration. More than 20 people were arrested when about 200 students "snake-danced" in defiance of police warnings.
There were several clashes between policemen and the demonstrators, and at one stage, police carrying riot shields charged the protestors. The demonstrators attempted to form up in front of the United States Embassy but police used trucks to blockade the roadway.
Another big demonstration is planned on April 28.
