  • Description

The UN General Assembly has asked the Security Council to take all appropriate steps to obtain the full and speedy implementation of its 1967 resolution setting guidelines for peace in the Middle East.

A resolution to this effect was passed by 86 votes to seven with 31 abstentions. The 1967 resolution called for Israel withdrawal from occupied Arab territory and an end to Arab belligerence.

Completing more than a week of debate, during which Arab members repeatedly asked for sanctions against Israel, the Assembly stopped short of endorsing that appeal, but invited all states to avoid actions that could constitute recognition of Israeli occupation.

The Netherlands delegate, Mr. Robert Fack, objected to certain aspects of the resolution, which could upset the delicate balance established by the Security Council resolution of 1967. Jordan's delegate praised it as a way of mobilising peaceful forces backed by the moral force of the United Nations.

Israel's ambassador, Mr. Yosef Tokoah, described the resolution as a product of Arab shorteightednoss. It was a spurious document and Israel would vote against it.
