    President Kenneth Kaunda has cancelled all new appointments to Zambia's foreign missions because they were not based on merit but on tribal affiliations.

    Dr. Kaunda also his out at Zambia's Ambassadors and High Commissioners who use their positions in society to build "their small tribal empires and engage in activities which are against the ruling United National Independence Party" (UNIP).

    The President was at the time addressing the heads of Zambia's foreign missions at the old National Assembly building in Lusaka where they had gathered for a briefing session on the country's foreign policy.

    President Kaunda said that in future, he would scrutinise all new appointments to foreign postings.

    He stated that the country's missions abroad must be representative of all the people of Zambia' and not of selected tribes only.
