  • Description

Ghana's Head of State Colonel Ignatius Acheampong visited the major port of Tema, 18 miles (29 kilometres) east of the capital, Accra, on Friday (12 September) to open a new cotton spinning factory.

The factory, which cost 2.4 million pounds sterling (5.1 million U.S. dollars) to construct, is owned by the Ghanaian West Coast Spinning Company (Wescospin). It is expected to produce more than 450 million kilograms (4.4 million tons) of cotton yarn per year to feed Ghana's expanding textile industry.

The new spinning works mean Ghana will no longer have to rely on large scale imports of unprocessed grey yarn. The joint operation of the plant and its sister factory, the West Coast Dyeing Industry, will enable the country to produce its own materials and thus save on foreign spending.

Raw cotton for the spinning works is now under production at newly established cotton plantations, also part of the Wescospin group.

At the opening ceremony, Colonel Acheampong called on Ghanaian businessmen and industrialists to follow Wescospin's example in producing its raw materials within Ghana. He said that foreign exchange would be made available to industrial concerns in direct proportion to their efforts to obtain raw materials locally. He also attacked foreign news services for publishing false reports on the state of the Ghanaian economy.
