Background: A bomb went off at the State Department headquarters in Washington, USA on Wednesday (29 January) and another was found in an army recruiting centre in California -- both planted as protests against President Ford's demands for more military aid to the Governments of Cambodia and South Vietnam.

In telephone calls to newspapers around the United States, the underground and long-dormant "Weather Organisation" claimed responsibility for bombs. Both in Washington and Oakland, California, they emphasised that they did not want anyone to get hurt.

In Oakland, bomb squad members found the device on the seventh floor of the army recruiting centre before it exploded and lowered it to the street below on a nylon cord. The explosive was then detonated, shattering windows in the town centre.

The State Department bomb blew out the walls of a women's toilet and damaged a nearby lift, but no-body was injured.

The "Weather Organisation", formed in 1969, argues that militant American leftists spend too much time debating ideology instead of taking direct action. It claimed responsibility for a bombing at the Pentagon in 1971 and is reputed to have between 20 and 30 members. Its leaders are being hunted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
