  • Description

The United Nations General Assembly strongly condemned on Friday (5 November) the nuclear and military collaboration which it said existed between the "racist minority regime of South Africa" and Britain, France, West Germany, Israel and the United States. By a vote of 93 to 9 against, with 19 abstentions, it called on all governments - particularly those five - to refrain from extending facilities enabling South Africa to produce uranium, plutonium and other nuclear materials, reactors or military equipment.

SYNOPSIS: The resolution was sponsored in committee by a block of 33 countries, including Afghanistan represented by Mr. Abdul Majid Mangal.

After the Assembly's voting board registered the delegates' votes, the Assembly's President, Mr. Amerisinghe, announced the result.
