  • Description

THE SOUTH VIETNAM AUTHORITIES TODAY (SATURDAY) RELEASED 140 PRISONERS OF WAR IN SPECIAL CEREMONIES IN SAIGON, THE CENTRAL CITY OF PLEIKU, AND NORTHERN DA NANG. THE PRISONERS, ALL OF THEM SOUTH VIETNAMESE, CLAIMED THEY HAD BEEN FORCED INTO MILITARY SERVICE BY THE NORTH VIETNAMESE.

THE RELEASED PRISONERS, WHO INCLUDED TEN WOMEN, ARE EXPECTED TO RETURN TO THEIR FAMILIES, MOSTLY LIVING IN THE SOUTHERN MEKONG AREA.

THE FREED PRISONERS ARE ONLY A SMALL PART OF THE 20-THOUSAND PRISONERS HELD IN CAMPS ACROSS SOUTH VIETNAM.

ONE OF THESE CAMPS IS AT BIEN HOA, 60 MILES NORTH OF SAIGON, WHERE SOME OF THOSE RELEASED TODAY WERE IMPRISONED.

ALSO IN THE CAMP ARE 40 PRISONERS OF WAR WHO ARE NOT SOUTH VIETNAMESE. SAIGON HAS OFFERED TO RELEASE THEM, BUT HANOI HAS SO FAR IGNORED THE OFFER. AMONG THEM ARE A NUMBER WHO ARE CRIPPLED.

HANOI INSISTS IT HAS NO TROOPS IN SOUTH VIETNAM.
