    MAJOR-GENERAL GOWON, HEAD OF NIGERIA'S FEDERAL MILITARY GOVERNMENT, YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) RECEIVED A COURTESY CALL FROM THE UNITED STATES' ASSISTANT SECRETARY OF STATE FOR AFRICAN AFFAIRS, MR. JOSEPH PALMER. MR. PALMER, ON A TOUR OF AFRICAN COUNTRIES, HAD EARLIER CALLED ON THE MILITARY GOVERNOR OF LAGOS STATE, COLONEL MABOLAJI JOHNSON.

    MR. PALMER, WHO WAS FORMERLY AMERICA AMBASSADOR TO NIGERIA, WAS REPORTED TO HAVE PRAISED THE EFFORTS OF THE NIGERIAN MILITARY LEADERS IN THEIR PRESENT CRISIS, ADDING THAT HE HAD ONCE CALLED ON THE REBELS, WHEN HE WAS IN YAOUNDE, TO RENOUNCE SECESSION, SO THAT PEACE AND TRANQUILLITY COULD RETURN TO THE COUNTRY. MR. PALMER WAS ALSO REPORTED TO HAVE SAID THAT HE REGARDED THE DECISION TO BREAK NIGERIA INTO 12 AUTONOMOUS STATES AS A SOLID ONE.

    FOLLOWING A FRIENDLY DISCUSSION WITH GENERAL GOWON, MR. PALMER PRESENTED THE MILITARY LEADER WITH A GIFT FROM THE AMERICAN GOVERNMENT.

    MR. PALMER WAS ACCOMPANIED BY THE PRESENT AMERICAN AMBASSADOR TO NIGERIA, MR. ELBERT MATHEWS. THE NIGERIAN COMMISSIONER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS, MR. ARIKPO WAS ALSO IN ATTENDANCE.
