  • Description

The people of Denmark voted on Monday (2 Oct) to join the European Common Market.

The result was no surprise....all pre-referendum polls had pointed to a clear decision for entry. The vote was a straight "Yes" or "No" and the result was binding on the Danish government.

Norway's decision not to join the EEC, in a similar referendum last month, was not expected to have much effect on the opinion of Danish voters, And apparently it didn't.

As early results came in, the pro-Marketeers swept into the lead with a two to one majority.

One of the first to vote was Prime Minister Jens Otto Krag, near his home in Copenhagen.

On arrival, he said he hoped voters would be sensible and vote "Yes" to entry to the European Economic Community.

SYNOPSIS: A polling station in Copenhagen...part of Denmark's referendum which decided on membership of the European Economic Community.

Crowds were out early, queueing to take part...a good indication of the high poll needed by the pro-marketeers to guarantee entry.

The pro and anti market campaign had dragged on for two months.

The result was not a surprise as all public opinion polls before the referendum had predicted a resounding yes. One of the first to vote was Prime Minister Jen Otto Krag. He told newsmen at the time he hoped Danes would be sensible and vote "Yes". Their affirmative vote is binding on the government.
