    THE BRITISH ASSAULT FRIGATE, HMS FEARLESS, SAILED INTO LAGOS HARBOUR YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) ONLY 24 HOURS BEFORE THE ARRIVAL OF BRITISH PRIME MINISTER, HAROLD WILSON. THE WARSHIP'S ARRIVAL IMMEDIATELY SPARKED RUMOURS IT MAY BE USED AS A NEGOTIATING PLATFORM BETWEEN THE TWO SIDES INVOLVED IN THE NIGERIAN WAR.

    RUMOURS AND SPECULATION HAVE BEEN RIFE DURING THE PAST FEW DAYS, AS TO THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE ARRIVAL OF THE SHIP AND THE BRITISH PRIME MINISTER'S VISIT.

    IN AN INTERVIEW BEFORE LEAVING FOR NIGERIA MR WILSON DENIED HE PLANNED ANY "SPECTACULAR TASK OF MEDIATION" BETWEEN THE TWO SIDES.

    ONE ROYAL NAVY REPRESENTATIVE WHO ARRIVED IN NIGERIA ON TUESDAY SAID THE SHIP'S COMMANDER HAD NO FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS THAN TO PROCEED TO LAGOS.

    ON BOARD FEARLESS ARE 32 OFFICERS AND FIVE HUNDRED AND 20 MEN.

    CROWDS GATHERED ALONG THE LAGOS MARINA TO WELCOME THE FRIGATE AS SHE PULLED INTO HARBOUR.

    IT'S THE SECOND TIME WITHIN FOUR WEEKS THAT NAVAL SHIPS HAVE SAILED INTO LAGOS.

    THREE RUSSIAN SHIPS AND A SUBMARINE LEFT THE PORT A FORTNIGHT AGO AFTER A GOODWILL VISIT TO NIGERIA.
