SCOPE: This coverage is of women in the Air Force during basic training as they attempt to pass the confidence course.

BACKGROUND: Basic training in anyone's military is not supposed to be easy, and the training centre at Lackland AFB, Texas is no exception.

The Air Force has been opening to women many activities previously available only to men, including basic training's demanding confidence course. Though this course is not mandatory, nearly 100 percent of the women recruits are trying it.

The confidence course is designed to do what the name says: build confidence. The course tests both the physical and mental stamina of the recruits as they proceed over and under, around and through. The course was originally built for men averaging five foot nine, but that doesn't stop the girls from making it through. Most say that it is strenuous, but a lot of fun. Even a quick dip in the pool doesn't dampen their spirits.
