Background: Crown Prince Akihito and Crown Princess Michiko arrived in Honolulu, Hawaii, Sept 22, to begin a two-week goodwill visit to the United States of America. After a traditional Hawaiian welcome at the airport, the Japanese royal couple drove to the National Memory Cemetery at Waikiki, where the Crown Prince laid a wreath.

At Hawaii's International Airport, the Crown Prince and his wife were greeted by Governor William F. Quinn of the recently created 50th State of the USA, garlanded with traditional Hawaiian lei's, and then the Crown Prince inspected a guard of honour.

Later they drove to the National Memorial Cemetery - situated in the now extinct Punchbowl volcano - at Waikiki, where Crown Prince Akihito laid a wreath and they both signed the visitors book.

Sept. 24 they flew to San Francisco, where they spent the weekend. Other American cities on their schedule include Los Angeles; Washington, New York; Chicago; Seattle; and Portland, Oregon. Their visit - at President Eisenhower's invitation - was originally intended for a return of Mr. Eisenhower's trip to Japan last June which was cancelled after students rioted against the Japanese Government and the new security treaty with the United States.
