  • Description

South Vietnamese Ranger units have begun the task of securing the town of Dat Do, 43 miles (70 kms) south-east of Saigon, which has been the scene of bitter fighting over the past ten days.

The town, in coastal Phuec Tuy province, was formerly base area of the Australian Vietnam force.

As South Vietnamese troops cleared the last of the North Vietnamese forces from the town at the weekend, the extent of the battle that had raged over the past several weeks became evident.

Air strikes and artillery had played a large part in the action and almost every building had been destroyed by the intensive pounding.

As Ranger reinforcements marched in to secure the town and clear the outlying areas of pockets of resistance, the first of the townspeople began to return.

But for most of them, little was left of the homes they had left behind hurriedly when the fighting broke out.

SYNOPSIS: South Vietnamese Ranger units enter the town of Dat Do, scene of bitter fighting over the past ten days. The town is the district headquarters of Phuec Tuy Province, and is the former base area of the Australian Vietnam forces. It's situation, 43 miles south-east of Saigon, makes it a vital link in the defenses of the capital, and the battle over it had been an intensive one.

Air strikes and artillery had played a large part in the action and almost every building had been levelled by the pounding the town received.

As the task of securing the town went on, the South Vietnamese troops made the most of their first opportunity to relax. For many it was the only chance they had in a week to bathe and cook themselves a meal.

As Ranger reinforcements moved in to clear the last pockets of resistance from the fringes of the town and the outlying areas, the sounds of battle faded in the distance.

And with the reinforcements came the first of the townspeople....on motor cycles and on foot. But for most of them, little was left of the homes they had left behind hurriedly when the fighting broke out.
