    A PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION TO CELEBRATE UNITED NATIONS DAY OPENED ON THURSDAY IN DAKAR. M. ABDOULAYE DIACK, THE SENEGALESE MINISTER OF INFORMATION, OPENED THE EXHIBITION. HE WAS WELCOMED ON ARRIVAL BY M. MARCEL CROISER, THE LOCAL UNITED NATIONS REPRESENTATIVE. PRESIDENT SENGHOR, IN A NATION-WIDE BROADCAST, UNDERLINED THE CONTRIBUTION MADE BY THE UNITED NATIONS ORGANISATION TO THE WELFARE OF SMALL NATIONS.

    M. ABDOULAYE DIACK TOOK PARTICULAR INTEREST IN THAT PART OF THE EXHIBITION DEVOTED TO UNITED NATIONS ACTIVITIES IN SENEGAL. PHOTOS SHOWING THE WORLD-WIDE STRUGGLE AGAINST ILLITERACY WERE POPULAR WITH VISITORS. M. DIACK WAS ACCOMPANIED BY THE DIRECTOR OF THE DEPARTMENT OF INFORMATION, M. MOUSTAPHA NIASS, AND THE TECHNICAL ADVISER OF THE DEPARTMENT, M. TIDIANE DALI N'DIAYE.

    IN HIS BROADCAST PRESIDENT SENGHOR SAID THAT THE MISSION OF THE UNITED NATIONS WAS TO PROMOTE INTERNATIONAL CO-OPERATION IN ALL FIELDS, HELP TO INCREASE EVERYBODY'S STANDARD OF LIVING, AND TO SPREAD CULTURE THROUGHOUT THE WORLD.

    THE UNITED NATIONS, PRESIDENT SENGHOR SAID, SUFFER FROM SERIOUS WEAKNESSES. IT WAS UNABLE TO STOP WARS, IT HAS NOT YET ELIMINATED RACIALISM OR COLONIAL DOMINATION. BUT IN SPITE OF ITS WEAKNESSES THE UNITED NATIONS ORGANISATION CONTRIBUTES TO THE ADVENT OF A NEW ORDER, IT ACTIVELY FIGHTS FOR PEACE AND AGAINST RACIALISM, IT PAVES THE WAY FOR DISARMAMENT AND FOR THE PEACEFUL SOLUTION OF CONFLICTS. SMALL NATIONS WILL BE GRATEFUL TO THE ORGANISATION FOR ITS ACTION IN PREVENTING WARS. SENEGAL HAS GREAT CONFIDENCE, THE PRESIDENT ADDED, IN THE FUTURE OF THE UNITED NATIONS.

    (IN NEW YORK MR. U THANT, UNITED NATIONS GENERAL SECRETARY, SAID THAT THE WORLD CONTINUES TO LIVE UNDER THE MENACE OF NUCLEAR WAR. SEVERAL POINTS OF TENSION, IN ASIA, AFRICA AND THE MIDDLE EAST STILL EXIST. HE ADDED THAT WE MUST CONTINUE TO PROCLAIM OUR FAITH IN HUMAN RIGHTS. UNITED NATIONS DAY COMMEMORATES THE PROCLAMATION OF THE U.N. CHARTER IN 1945).
