Background: NEAR SAUSSET LES PINS, FRANCE

A whale, beached in a small bay, some 40 kilometres (25 miles) from the French port of Marseilles, had to be put down. The animal was found stranded near the small resort of Sausset Les Pins, on November 7, suffering from a severe eye injury, presumably inflicted when it got caught in fishermen's nets. Because of its injuries, attempts to return it to sea were deemed worthless by a veterinary surgeon, who decided to inject it with a lethal dose of a tranquilizer, to end its misery. The 1,000-kilos (over 2,000 pounds) animal was then sent to the Natural History Museum in Marseilles. It was the eighth whale to have been found stranded on the Mediterranean coast in the past ten years.
