    A total of 18 separate development projects in Africa, all financed by the European Community's Development Fund, were signed at a special ceremony at the Community's headquarters in Brussels on Monday (14 November).

    SYNOPSIS: The special session at the Berlaymont building brought together representatives of 15 African countries, and two African regional organisations Between them, they were responsible for 18 separate projects, covering a wide range of economic and social activates. a textile factory in Tanzania received spacial aid; in Ethiopia, a vast housing scheme has been made possible; in Sierra Leone, the National Bank will received a special credit to be distributed according to local needs. The money has come from the European Community's Development Fund -- a total of 110 million dollars.

    Monsieur Claude Cheysson, EEC Commissioner for Development Aid, signed on behalf of the Community. For the Botswana representative, Madame Mathe, the aid will go towards a new University of Botswana and Swaziland, and housing and small businesses.

    Swaziland's representative, Industry Minister Dr. Nxumalo, also singed an agreement for more aid for a housing project, and to encourage small local projects.

    Other agreements included new health centres and investment in tea plantations in Zambia; for Sudan, a grant to set up tea plantations in the south of the country; and for lesotho, money to equip an industrial zone on the outskirts of the capital, Meseru. In French speaking Africa, village wells will be improved and increased; and, in Mali, rural rice production will be boosted.
