  • Description

STRONG OPPOSITION APPEARED IN SALISBURY YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) TO THE PRIME MINISTER'S ATTITUDE TOWARDS INDEPENDENCE. IT CAME FROM A PROMINENT SALISBURY BUSINESSMAN -- MR V. BRITNEFF -- WHO PAID GBP150 TO INSERT A FULL PAGE ADVERTISEMENT IN "THE RHODESIA HERALD". THE ADVERTISEMENT COMPRISED FIVE WORDS: "SMITH MUST GO -- VOTE NO."
MR. BRITNEFF HAS BEEN DISTRIBUTING SMALL BADGES TO HIS FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS.

THE CITY WAS GOING ABOUT ITS BUSINESS NORMALLY ON THE EVE OF TODAY'S NATIONAL REFERENDUM ON THE COUNTRY'S FUTURE. VOTERS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY ARE GOING TO THE POLLS TODAY TO ANSWER THE QUESTION -- "ARE YOU IN FAVOUR OF INDEPENDENCE BASED ON THE 1961 CONSTITUTION?" A VOTE IN FAVOUR OF INDEPENDENCE WOULD BE VICTORY FOR MR IAN SMITH THE PRIME MINISTER -- WHO HAS SUGGESTED THAT IF BRITAIN DOES NOT GRANTS HIS COUNTRY INDEPENDENCE, THEN HE MUST DECLARE IT UNILATERALLY. THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT IS CONCERNED THAT THE VAST MAJORITY OF AFRICANS IN THE COUNTRY ARE NOT GIVEN THE VOTE -- AND THAT THEREFORE THEY WOULD BE RULED BY A WHITE MINORITY.

SUPPORT FOR THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT'S STAND HAS COME FROM A NUMBER OF PROMINENT PEOPLE IN SOUTHERN RHODESIA INCLUDING POLITICIANS, CHURCHMEN AND BUSINESSMEN. ELIGIBLE TO VOTE IN THE REFERENDUM ARE NINETY THOUSAND EUROPEANS AND TWELVE THOUSAND AFRICANS. THE RESULT WILL DECIDE THE FUTURE COURSE OF MR SMITH'S DEALINGS WITH BRITAIN UPON THE INDEPENDENCE ISSUE.
