  • Description

The People's Republic of Angola was admitted as the 146th member of the United Nations on Wednesday (1 December). We pick up the meeting of the General Assembly as the President for the 31st Session, Ambassador Hamilton Shirley Amerasinghe, of Sri Lanka, announces the result of the admission vote.

SYNOPSIS: The delegation of Angola is headed by the country's first Deputy Premier, Mr. Jose Eduardo Dos Santors, former foreign minister, appointed to his new position only on Monday (29 November). Last June the United States vetoed Angola's application in the Security Council and questioned whether Angola was truly independent. Responding to African appeals the American delegation abstained when the Council reconsidered the candidacy last week. The President of the Assembly congratulated Angolans upon their admition.

The Secretary General of the United Nations spoke at the flag raising ceremony in front of the UN Headquarters in New York.
