  • Description

A shipment of 22 dogs is to sail to Australia on Monday, the first to be allowed into the country since the lifting of a two-year ban on dogs from Britain.

The Australian authorities imposed the ban in 1969, due to an outbreak of rabies in Britain. It was lifted on the 12th of August.

The long ban has meant that many owners, including new immigrants to australia, have been unable to get their pets into the country.

The group of dogs in this film will arrive in Australia on September 2.

SYNOPSIS: On Sunday morning at Tilbury dock in London, the container-ship "Moreton Bay" loaded a cargo of 22 dogs, due to sail for Australia on Monday.

They are the first large group of dogs allowed into Australia to be re-united with their owners during the last two years.

In 1969 the Australian authorities imposed a total ban on the import of dogs from Britain, following the outbreak of an epidemic of rabies in the U.K.

On the 12th. of August the ban was lifted, so now many frustrated owners, many of them new emigrants to Australia, will be able to get their dogs into the country. Since the ban was imposed, the problem of the 'prohibited immigrant' pets has been regularly featured in the Australian press. On the voyage out the dogs will be exercised on the deck every day by a dog-handler travelling with them. They arrive on September second, when they will be checked over by a vet.
