M. Rijk Cornelis, the last Governor-General of the Belgian Congo - now the Congo Republic?
M. Rijk Cornelis, the last Governor-General of the Belgian Congo - now the Congo Republic - left Ndjili airport, Leopoldville, July 5, on his way home to Belgium. At the airport to see him and his family off were president Kasavubu and Premier Patrice Lumumba.
Also at the airport was Commander-in-Chief of the Republic's army, General Emille Janssens, who resigned from his post July 6, after an outbreak of mutiny in the ranks of the Force Publique, the new state's security force. The troops demanded that their European officers should be replaced with black troops.
The Governor-General will fly to Matadi, on the coast, where he will board a liner and sail for Belgium. He arrive in the Congo in 1958 for the normal five-year period of office.
