  • Description

--De Gaulle continued his tour to Troyes where he spent the night of April 27th and attended mass the following morning before leaving for Paris.

The president was greeted on his arrival at Troyes cathedral by bishop of Troyes, Msgr.Lecouedec.Mme.De Gaulle was also present.

Afterwards, in the Prefecture square, General Massu inspected troops prior to De Gaulle's arrival.

Cheering crowds greeted on his arrival at the town hall for a reception of civic heads. He later made a speech in which he expressed the hope that Russia and Eastern European countries would one day prefer the rights of man and liberty to their present yoke, saying that when that day came France would be in the lead to stretch out its hand to those at present separated from her by the "barriers of an absurd and outdated ideology."
The president went on to speak of matters of European economic cooperation, urging that there should be one policy for The Six on defence, economic. And social development. On the question of British entry into the Common Market, the president repeated earlier statements that Britain would be admitted one day, perhaps, once she had accepted the rules" we ourselves have adopted."
The president returned to Paris the same evening.
