Background: The President of Mauritania Moktar Ould Daddah has been paying an official visit to Belgium. On Wednesday (1 February) he met members of the European Economic Community Commission to discuss the possibility of EEC financial support for Mauritanian development projects.
SYNOPSIS: President Ould Daddah's meeting with members of the European Economic Community commission was held at the Barleymont building in Brussels. It is the main headquarters of the commission.
Mr Roy Jenkins -- the current President of the EEC Commission -- greeted the Mauritanian President as he arrived. Mr Ould Daddah had come seeking EEC financial help for its fight against the drought which is expected to cost Mauritania half its wheat crop this year.
At the conference table, the Mauritanian President outlined his country's present difficulties. Later it was confirmed that the Community would lend Mauritania 12.3 million dollars towards a road construction project. This represents a contribution of about ten per cent towards the cost of building a 900 kilometre road between Nouakchott the Mauritanian capital -- and the south western town of Nema.
