  • Description

An aboriginal youth who wants to become a bush pilot or a member of the Flying Doctor Service arrived in Sydney today to begin his flight training. The youth-Bill Bennell of Perth - showed an immediate interest in aircraft. Mr. Jim Monahan, who'll be his instructor, explained the operation of a variable pitch propeller. Bill Bennell was selected from several hundred aboriginal youths from all over Australia for a flying scholarship.

The scholarship was offered by the Australian Owners and Pilots Association, and an appeal for funds has been opened in all states. Bill wanted to see the controls of the aircraft in which he had flown from Perth this morning. He said the flight was only the second time he had flown. The first was during an aptitude test in Perth, which lasted for two hours.

The intricate controls were explained by Jim Monahan, who is captain of the Royal Aero Club. Bill Bennell says he hopes to use his training to help his people. Tomorrow, he will begin the intensive training programme which may make him the first qualified air pilot his people has produced.
