Background: Hundreds of Greek Cypriot demonstrators clashed with police outside the Untied states Embassy in Nicosia, Cyprus on Monday (12 April).
The demonstrators were protesting against United States military aid to Turkey. Police used tear gas and made several baton charges against the rioters, who fought back with a barrage of stones.
The Cyprus Government had taken massive precautions to protect the embassy building, which was beseiged and stoned in a similar demonstration last Tuesday.
Although the demonstrators held their ground and on several occasions managed to push the police back, they failed to approach the embassy building. The three-hour demonstration was jointly organised by right-wing organisations and communist-led Greek Cypriot trade unions. 16 people were said to have been injured in the pitched battle between the police and demonstrators.
