Background: Athletics...and on Tuesday (14 November) Asian Sports representatives failed to reach agreement in talks with the International Amateur Athletics Federation aimed at getting recognition for the Asian Games due to start in December. The IAAF had announced it would not recognise track and field events in the Games, after the Asian Games Federation (AGF) decided to exclude Israel from participating.

SYNOPSIS: The eleven member nations of the AGF took their decision not to invite Israel to the games because of security risks. The President of the AGF, Air Marshall Dawee Chullasaphya of Thailand welcomed delegates to the executive committee meeting. He has suggested a compromise to the problem - that two Israeli members of the Asian Games council march with their country's flag at the opening and closing ceremonies of the games. The Israelis have suggested a small contingent from their team be allowed to take part in the parade, and are not insisting on taking part in the events
Delegates from Arab countries of the AGF say there should be no compromise over the issue, and Marshal Dawee has told newsmen that the games will take place regardless of the stand taken by the IAAF.

A recent IAAF congress in Puerto Rico would not recognize the Games. The President of the ???AAF, Adrian Paulen, is visiting Bangkok to try and work out a solution to the problem. After the two-hour meeting Mr. Paulen told newsmen he had failed to reach a compromise with the AGF, but said he would delay further comment until after a full AGF council meeting the following day (15 November).
