  • Description

The Tibetan community in the Indian capital of New Delhi demonstrated on Friday (16 June) to mark to 20th anniversary of Tibet's rebellion against Chinese rule.

SYNOPSIS: More than one hundred demonstrators assembled in temperatures around 107 degress Fahrenheit (41.7 Celsius) and marched on the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi.

A strong contingent of Delhi Riot Police were on hand for the demonstration. It had been expected that many more demonstrators would be involved.

The Chinese Embassy was closed, and guarded by police. Chinese Embassy officials were reported to have watched the demonstration from behind the safety of the walls of their compound.

The demonstrators carried with them a protest note in which the organisers said the Tibetan people would have to do more on their own to see their demands were met. The United Nations they said, could not be relied on as it had become a political manoeuvring forum for the super powers.

The protest note, which was attached to the Embassy wall, said the Tibetan people would never recognise any border agreement reached only between India and China and called on India to recognise their exiled religious leader, the Dalai Lama, as the leader of the Tibetan people.
