  • Description

The search for oil has begun in the African Republic of Chad.

Exploration is being carried out near the town of Doba, about 248 miles (400 kilometres) southeast of the capital, Njamena (formerly Forty Lamy), by the Continental Oil Company of Chad (CONOCO). Drills have been sunk, but as yet, no hydro-carbons have been found.

The drilling was officially inaugurated on Tuesday (December 18) by the Republic's President N'Gartha Tombalbaye. The ceremony was also attended by the Director General of CONOCO, M. Vogeli, U.S. oil company representatives, and executive members of the National Movement for Cultural and Social Revolution (M.N.R.C.S.)
President Tombalbaye, who's Secretary General of the M.N.R.C.S., said the discovery of oil in Chad would enable his Government to take more concrete steps towards developing the national economy.

The Director General of CONOCO said although no hydro-carbons had yet been found, the drilling would give the company vital information on the composition of the country's subsoils. Without this information, he said, no assessment could be made of the chances of finding oil.

The Republic of Chad's northern, eastern and western neighbours -- Libya, the Sudan and Nigeria -- all produce oil.
