  • Description

Finnish riders took first and second places in the opening round of the Equestrian Section of the World Modern Pentathlon at Crystal Palace in South London on Wednesday (September 5). Third place went to an American rider.

Risto Hurme was one of three riders to have a faultless 1,100-point round over the tough 800-metre circuit and qualified for top place by having the fastest round. Martti Ketelas was second and John Fitzgerald, third of the 49 competitors from 19 countries.

The event is among the most difficult of equestrian competition, as the riders draw their mounts by lot. The Soviet competitor, former world champion Boris Onichenko, held up the start of the event when he objected to the horse he was given. Officials has inadvertently switched the numbers of two horses.

Czechoslovakia are leading the team event with 3,128 points; West Germany second, 3,112 points; Denmark and Rumania tied for third, 3,076 points.
