  • Description

President Frondizi of the Argentine, during a courtesy visit July 15 of a squadron of the Royal Navy's South Atlantic Fleet, went aboard the acting flagship of the Commander of the Fleet, Vice Admiral Sir Dymock Watson, to toast Anglo-Argentine relations.

The visit of the President marked a day of respite from political and social unrest which threatened his Administration this month.

The President inspected a guard of honour formed by the ships' companies of the strongly-armed frigates Lynx and Chichester. Ceremonies were transferred from the aircraft carrier Albion, the flagship, which had to remain in the River Plate because of tide difficulties. Ambassador Sir John Guthrie Ward welcomed the President on board the Lynx.

In ceremonies ashore, Royal Navy officers and men paid tribute, July 16, at the monuments of Argentine Admiral William Brown and General Jose de San Martin.

Several thousands citizens visited the British ships.

The South Atlantic squadron is on the last stages of a nine-month tour and returns to Portsmouth next month.
