  • Description

Visnews filmed Donald Campbell speeding across Coniston Water, UK., May 13, at 265 mph in his jet-powered 'boat' Bluebird on his first fast trial this year.

The following day, May 14, at 11.15 am, he broke his own water speed record - 248.62 mph - over the measure kilometre of 275 mph and 245 mph, a mean speed of 260 mph.

On the eve of this record-breaking attempt Campbell was unable to follow up his 265 mph run because "something like a heron" was flying directly ahead of him. "If I had hit it at speed it would probably have spelt disaster".

Shortly after berthing Bluebird, with the record made, Donald Campbell said he would make attempts on the land and water speed records.

This is the sixth time in four years this son of a 'speed-king' has smashed the water-speed record.
