  • Description

A new telephone link has just been opened between Dakar, the capital of the west African country of Senegal and Casablanca in Morocco on Africa's Mediterranean coast.

The new line is soon expected to link the Ivory Coast, Nigeria, and Mauritania as well.

SYNOPSIS: The celebrations in Dakar were lively.

The underground cable from Dakar to Casablanca was first suggested in 1963. Work started three years ago, and the governments of the Ivory Coast and France were also involved in making the idea a reality. The Senegalese Communications Minister Monsieur Alassane Daly Ndiaye was at the ceremony.

The Moroccan Telecommunications Minister Mr. Daouda Sow and his Senegalese counterpart joined the tape to complete the final link in the line across the continent.

Later President Senghor of Senegal spoke to King Hassan of Morocco on the new line. King Hassan said he hoped that soon all African countries would be able to telephone each other directly as Morocco and Senegal now can. The event, he said, had opened another door in world communications.
