  • Description

TWO CARS LINED UP AT THE START OF A TRACK IN CALIFORNIA LAST WEEK FOR AN UNUSUAL RACE. ONE WAS A CONVENTIONAL RACING CAR BUT HE VEHICLE FANCIED TO WIN WAS A JET-CAR FITTED WITH AN ENGINE GIVING 12,000 HORSEPOWER. AS THEY ROARED DOWN THE STRAIGHT COURSE, THE CONVENTIONAL DRAG-RACING CAR REVEALED ITS FASTER GETAWAY AND REACHED THE FINISHING LINE INCHES AHEAD OF ITS RIVAL.

IN DRAG RACES THE WINNERS HAVE TO REACH THE FINISHING LINE FIRST AS OPPOSED TO GETTING THE HIGHEST SPEED, IN THIS RACE THE CONVENTIONAL DRAG CAR, USING NITRO-METHANE, WAS PUSHED BY ITS BLOWN CHRYSLER ENGINE TO 189 MILES AN HOUR. THE JET USED THE ORTHODOX JET ENGINE FUEL TO REACH A MAXIMUM SPEED OF 208 MILES AN HOUR -- BUT AFTER IT HAD CROSSED THE LINE.

ONLY A FEW INCHES SEPARATED THE JET-CAR AND THE CONVENTIONAL DRAGSTER AND AN ELECTRONIC TIME TRAP WAS NECESSARY TO PLACE THE WINNER.
