• Short Summary

THE RHODESIAN PRIME MINISTER, MR. IAN SMITH, YESTERDAY (MONDAY) REPLIED TO WHAT HE CALLED "FABRICATIONS"?

  • Description

THE RHODESIAN PRIME MINISTER, MR. IAN SMITH, YESTERDAY (MONDAY) REPLIED TO WHAT HE CALLED "FABRICATIONS" ABOUT THE FORTHCOMING GENERAL ELECTION. HE DENIED THAT THE ELECTION WAS, IN EFFECT, TO SEEK A MANDATE TO MAKE A UNILATERAL DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE (U.D.I.) HE ALSO DENIED THAT, BECAUSE HIS RHODESIAN FRONT PARTY WAS SEEKING AT LEAST A TWO-THIRDS MAJORITY IN PARLIAMENT, HIS COUNTRY WAS TO BECOME A ONE-PARTY STATE. THE ELECTION IS TO BE HELD ON MAY 7.

(YESTERDAY, THE RHODESIAN GOVERNMENT SAID IT WOULD CONSIDER REPATRIATING TO ZAMBIA AND MALAWI ABOUT HALF-A-MILLION NON-INDIGENOUS AFRICANS IF THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT CARRIED OUT THREATS OF ECONOMIC SANCTIONS SHOULD RHODESIA SEIZE INDEPENDENCE).
