  • Description

Some of the world's leading athletes are currently in New Zealand and several of them met at an athletics meeting in Christchurch on Saturday (21 January). The meeting produced highly competitive running, with some New Zealand athletes thrilling their home crowd with world class performances. In the men's 100 metres, victory went to the Jamaican Don Quarrie with a time of 10.51 seconds; in the 1,500 metres, John Walker the local favourite and Olympic champion, was narrowly beaten by Ireland's Eamonn Coughlan; but in the men's 5,000 metres the New Zealand crowd witnessed a memorable race by two of their countrymen-Rod Dixon and Dick Quax-who finished first and second respectively.
