  • Description

A spokesman for the West German airline, Lufthnasa said today (Wednesday, 20 November) that the reasons for the jumbo jet crash at Nairobi airport this morning should be known fairly soon.

Speaking at the company's office in Frankfurt, West Germany, Dr. Karl Wingenrot said a team of West German crash experts, doctors and senior airline officials would begin investigating the crash immediately. He said West German criminal police and Civil Aviation offices were also in the investigating group.

Dr. Wingenrot confirmed that 96 of the 157 people on board --including 13 of the 17 crew members -- survived the crash, and 55 people were killed. The fate of the six others was still not known.

The Lufthansa spokesman said the voice recorder and "black box" flight recorder had been retrieved intact, and this should help speed the investigation considerably. Dr. Wingenrot said that conversations between the aircraft and the Nairobi control tower had not indicated any trouble.

Lufthansa described the captain of the 747 jet, Christian Krack, as one of its most experienced pilots. He was among the crew members who survived almost unharmed.

The jumbo -- named "Hessen" after the West German state -- was insured for 70,000,000 Deutsch Marks (nearly GBP 12,000,000 sterling). It was the first jumbo jet to crash since the mammoth aircraft were introduced on commercial flights nearly five years ago.
