HELDMAN: "He was found dead by a shot exact in his neck... there. And by a weapon which is 18 centimetres long -- so long. He was found near the door -- with the back to the door. The circumstances, I think, are not that of suicide."



REPORTER: "It's a very serious allegation, then, that you are making against the German authorities?"



HELDMAN: "I don't know if the German authorities are directly responsible."



REPORTER: "Who else could have killed Baader, if he was killed by someone else?"



HELDMAN: "I don't know. Perhaps terrorists."



REPORTER: "What about the others who died in prison? Have you any knowledge of what happened to them?"



HELDMAN: "It's really curious that now all the people of this group are dead."



The West German government has denied the lawyers' allegations. Interior Minister Werner Maihofer said that an international commission had agreed unanimously that outsiders had nothing to do with the three convicted terrorists who died in prison. One West German report said that the autopsy has established clearly that they killed themselves. Officials said they left notes to make people think that they were murdered.

Background: West German industrialist Hanns-Martin Schleyer has been killed by the urban guerrillas who abducted him on September 5. His body was recovered on Wednesday (19 October) from a car in Mulhouse, a city in eastern France close to the West German border. Dr. Schleyer was president of the West German employers' federation. He was kidnapped after his car and a police escort vehicle were sprayed with automatic fire when he was being driven home from office through Cologne's evening rush hour. A security agent and two policemen were killed. Later messages made it clear he had been abducted by the Red Army Faction who demanded the release of 11 terrorists in exchange for his life. The case also became linked with the Lufthansa hijack.

SYNOPSIS: Police said they found the German-registered car parked in a Mulhouse street. They towed it away to open its boot, taking strict security precautions in case of a booby-trap. As forensic experts began examining the car for clues, the West German government in Bonn vowed that it would hunt down Dr. Schleyer's killers. The body's recovery followed a message from Red Army terrorists, to a Left-wing Paris newspaper and the Stuttgart office of the West German news agency. The message said his "miserable and corrupt existence" had been ended.

At a press conference in Bonn, lawyers accused by authorities of using their right of access to prisoners to help coordinate the Baader-Meinhof gang's activities from inside jail, charged the government with turning a blind eye to murder. The attack was led by Herr Hans Heinz Heldman, who defended one of the leaders of the group, Andreas Baader, found dead in prison on Tuesday (18 October). He claimed Baader was murdered.
