  • Description

The Arabian Gulf State on Thursday (22 February) celebrated its national day on the first anniversary of the bloodless coup which brought the present Emir to power.

Emir Sheikh Khalifa Bin Hamed Al-Thani assumed power on 22 February, 1972 when the previous Emir, his cousin, was abroad on a hunting holiday. Sheikh Khalife said he assumed power to halt deteriorating conditions in the oil-rich state and to remove elements which he said tried to hinder modernisation.

The main celebrations of the national day national day was a parade of the armed forces at their training centre near the capital, Doha. Sheikh Khalifa took the salute and reviewed forces of the Army, Navy, Air Force and police.

After the military parade, the Sheikh inaugurated a new luxury hotel in Doha. The Gulf Hotel, owned by the state, was built at a cost of GBP 3 million sterling (US $7 million). It is Qatar's first state owned hotel and the Government hopes it will attract businessmen and tourists to the state. The State's hotel company is headed by Mr. Ahmed Mannai.
