  • Description

India has asked East Germany to supply it with modern machinery to rescue its ailing textile industry.

India's Minister for Industry and Civil Supplies, Mr. T.A. Pai, made the proposal during talks with East German Deputy Premier, Wolfgang Rauchfuss, who is on a six day visit to India. Mr. Pai suggested other possibilities of economic cooperation between the two countries.

India has 110 textile mills which desperately need modernising to enable adequate production for export. Mr. Pai is also understood to have suggested that East Germany buy textiles produced by the mills, if and when, they return to full production.

Mr. Rauchfuss is the second East German minister to visit India this year for top level talks on bilateral cooperation. The East German Minister for Defence, General Heinz Hoffman, visited the country in January.

During his visit Mr. Rauchfuss also had talks with other government ministers, including the Minister for External Affairs, Mr. Y.B.Chavan, and President, Mr. Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed.

SYNOPSIS: On Tuesday visiting East German Deputy Premier Wolfgang Rauchfuss met India's External Affairs Minister Mr. Y.B.Chavan in New Delhi.

Mr. Rauchfuss arrived in India on Monday for a six day goodwill visit during which he will have talks with government ministers on Indo-East German cooperation.

In an earlier round of talks with India's Minister for Industry and Civil Supplies, Mr. T.A. Pai, Mr. Rauchfuss discussed a proposal by the Indian government for East Germany to supply modern machinery to assist India's ailing textile industry. Mr. Pai is also understood to have suggested that East Germany buy more textiles from India.

Later on Tuesday Mr. Rauchfuss met India's President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed. Mr. Rauchfuss' visit is the second by an East German minister this year. In January the Minister for Defence, General Heinz Hoffman, was in India for top level talks with government officials and Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

During his stay Mr. Rauchfuss will take part in a joint Indo-East German Commission designed to explore possibilities of further cementing economic and cultural relations between the two countries. It is expected the next commission meeting will be held towards the end of this year.
