Background: SYNOPSIS: Far from the city, where there is little - if any - organised entertainment the ingenuity of the "Outback Aussie" is at its best.....Country folk, without the amenities of their city cousins, have developed many new and somewhat off-beat "sports"...and they've proven a tourist draweard.
Newsman BRIAN AFDERSON has been "bush" this weekend to see how one town entertains its visitors.
Processions of course are rather old hat these days - almost every town has at least one a year.....it's what follows that counts.....and one of those "special events" at LIGHTNING RIDGE are the annual LIZARD RACES...
The local "mounts" come in many shapes and sizes and any aspiring big-time race-goer can purchase an entry on the spot.
There's trouble at the barrier...
And they are ??? !!!
Another "first" for LIGHTNING RIDGE.... wrestling with a difference - open to all comers the event attracted the interest of the crowd - but many of the local lads who had earlier boasted of their skill in the mud pool were nowhere to be found.
So it was left to a local LASS to accept the challenge and the name CRAZY emblazoned on her singlet did not go un-noticed...
There is one slight hitch....there are NO WRITTEN RULES for the sport of mud wrestling - so it was not clear whether the object of the exercise was to dump your opponent in the mud - or try to keep hold of your opponent once mud-covered....or just to get covered in mud as quickly as possible.
Win OR lose - it seems mud wrestling is here to stay - as Lightning Ridge's big event of the year.
It may be messy.....but its still good clean fun!
