  • Description

DURING RECENT MONTHS, UNITED STATES FORCES IN VIETNAM HAVE INTENSIFIED THEIR ROUTINE PATROLS OF SOUTH VIETNAM'S RIVERS, IN A BID TO HALT THE SMUGGLING OF WEAPONS TO VIET CONG SOLDIERS. THIS EXCLUSIVE FILM SHOWS MEN OF THE 198TH LIGHT INFANTRY BRIGADE PATROLLING THE AN THANH RIVER, IN QUANG NAM PROVINCE, SOME 350 MILES NORTHEAST OF SAIGON. THEY BELONG TO THE NEWLY-FORMED AMERICAN DIVISION (EDITORS: AMERICAL IS CORRECT).

THE AN THANH RIVER FLOWS OUT TO THE SOUTH CHINA SEA. IT SERVES AS A HIGHWAY FOR THE INHABITANTS OF THIS COASTAL PROVINCE, AND, ABOUNDING WITH FISH, IT PROVIDES MUCH OF THEIR FOOD.

PATROLS OF AMERICAN OBSERVATION AIRCRAFT HAVE, WITHIN THE LAST FEW MONTHS, REPORTED SUSPICIOUS MOVEMENTS OF CERTAIN VESSELS IN THE RIVER. TO CHECK ON THEM, MORE OF THE HIGH-POWERED ALUMINUM ASSAULT CRAFT HAVE BEEN INTRODUCED, EACH CAPABLE OF A SPEED OF 45 KNOTS.

IN ONE ROUTINE SEARCH ON TUESDAY (23 JANUARY), TWO MEN WERE INTERCEPTED BY THE BOAT, AND ARRESTED FOR SUSPICIOUS BEHAVIOUR. THEY WERE UNABLE TO SHOW THE NECESSARY IDENTITY PAPERS, AND SO THEY WERE BLIND-FOLDED AND TAKEN TO AN ARMY OUTPOST FOR QUESTIONING.
