  • Description

THE FIRST REGULAR HOVERCRAFT SERVICE TO LINK BRITAIN AND FRANCE OPENS THIS MONTH. TODAY (WEDNESDAY), THE INAUGURAL CROSSING WAS MADE WITH INVITED PASSENGERS AND NEWSMEN ON BOARD. IT TOOK JUST UNDER AN HOUR. BUT IT;S EXPECTED TO BE CUT TO 30 MINUTES ON SUMMER DAYS - WHICH IS ABOUT AN HOUR LESS THAN THE CROSSING BY SHIP. THE CROSSING IS BETWEEN RAMSGATE ON THE KENT COAST AND CALAIS -- A DISTANCE OF 27 MILES (44 KMS). THE FARE IS GBP2 5 SHILLINGS, SINGLE.

THE HOVERCRAFT, AN SRN 6, TRAVELLED OVER A CHOPPY SEA AT 40 MILES AN HOUR (65 KMS), SKIMMING OVER THE SHIFTING GOODWIN SANDS, THE GRAVEYARD OF MANY SHIPS.

AT TIMES THE 38-SEATED CRAFT SEEMED TO FLY THROUGH CLOUDS AS THE SPRAY ROSE OVER THE CUSHION OF AIR.

HEADING STRAIGHT INTO THE WEATHER, THE OUTWARD TRIP WAS NOT A SMOOTH ONE.

THE REGULAR SERVICES STARTS ON APRIL 20 - FOR THE SUMMER ONLY. BUT IN TWO YEARS' TIME, MUCH BIGGER HOVERCRAFT, 160-TON SRN 4's, WILL BE OPERATING SERVICES THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. THEY WILL BE ABLE TO CARRY 250 PASSENGERS AND 35 CARS.

SWEDISH FIRMS (SWEDISH AMERICA LINE AND SWEDISH LLOYD) ARE BEHIND THE TWO VENTURES. HOWEVER WHEN THE SRN 4 SERVICE OPENS AT THE END OF THE MONTH, TWO BRITISH FIRMS WILL START RIVAL SERVICES BETWEEN DOVER AND CALAIS AT THE SAME TIME.

BRITISH AND FRENCH RAILWAYS ARE ALSO CONSIDERING INTRODUCING CROSS-CHANNEL HOVERCRAFT SERVICES.
