  • Description

A late goal from Scotland's world cup star Kenny Dalglish gave Liberpool a 1-0 victory in the final of the European Cup against Belgian champions Bruges at Wembley in London on Wednesday night (10 May).

SYNOPSIS: Although Liverpool, in the dark shirts, did not attain the high standard of playing that defeated Borussia in Rome last season, they worked to victory against defiant Bruges with patient, soundly professional football. From the outset Liverpool applied pressure. Kenny Dalglish, especially, was in the forefront of Liverpool's attack. This one was unsuccessful.

Liverpool were rarely in danger of losing to the hard-working Belgian team who missed the skill and experience of Lambert and Courant, two of their key forwards. They settled down to a tight defensive game.

At first it looked as if Liverpool manager Bov Paisley's decision to leave out the more experienced heighway and retain Fairclough up front and not worked too well. Fairclough fell into the Belgians' cleverly-laid offside trap. But soon Liverpool gained midfield strength.
