Short shorts and tributes to the late doyenne of Paris fashion, Coco Chanel, were highlights of spring collections unveiled by several top London fashion designers yesterday (Wednesday).

The designer with the most avant garde ideas was Michael. His collection included outfits with shorts -- a style already threatening to become the 1971 successor to the mini-skirt.

Gaucho pants, which Michael introduced three years ago, well in advance of Paris, are retained in his present collection.

The tribute to that great Parisienne Coco Chanel, who died earlier this week, came from Jo Mattli. He showed the sort of stylish outfits that have been part of every well-dressed woman's wardrobe for several generations.

Another famous name in fashion, Hardy Amies, has settled this year for what he calls the "demi" length for daytime wear. But the most dramatic impact of his collection comes from his evening dresses, which employ bold colours and striking prints.
