  • Description

Preparations for the America's Cup race in September were further advanced as June 13th. with the launching of Weatherly, at Stamford, Conn. USA. This craft is one of three specially designed and built to match the British 'mystery'ship "Sceptre".

"Weatherly" follows "Columbia" into the water. Both have started or will shortly start trials for the big race later this year. Light-blue, "Weatherly's" hull is slimmer than is usual for a 12-metre yacht and has a keel, which is a single casting of lead, weighing 36,000 lbs.

She is 69 ft. overall and 46 1/2 ft. at the waterline. Blossoming out from an aluminium spar. 82 ft. above the slightly arched deck, will be 1,905 so.ft.of sail. All the rigging is stainless steel, fastening are of Everdur bronze and the planking of African mahogany.

The daughter-in-law of one of the syndicate members, Mrs. Douglas Mercer, launched "Weatherly" with a bottle of champagne, in true boating style. Skippered by Arthur Knapp, the craft stands a fair chance of selection after the forthcoming preliminary trials, and if she doesn't win the America's Cup, she will have the distinction of racing against "Sceptre".
